Insights from our IP experts

As IP experts (experts), we can talk about Intellectual Property for hours. Knowledge, experiences, questions and interesting facts: the list is extensive. Our Collective Memory contains a lot of valuable information. Both comprehensive articles and concise pieces. Below are two random examples from this source of knowledge.

Can you protect your invention in different countries?

Sure, but this requires a thoughtful strategy. Patent protection is territorial - a patent is only valid in the country where it is applied for. For multiple countries, you can apply separately for each country, file a European application (valid in 38 countries) or use an international PCT application for 150+ countries. The PCT route offers more time and flexibility to decide where you want final protection. The best choice depends on your objectives, budget and desired markets. Learn more.

When is a patent valid?

A patent becomes valid from the grant date by the patent granting authority such as the European Patent Office or Octrooicentrum Nederland. This date is always on the patent publication. During the examination process, there is no enforceable protection yet - after all, it is still an application. Once granted, however, the protection can work back to the filing date. The maximum duration of protection is 20 years from filing, provided you pay the annual fee. Learn more.
